Fiber optics cable was being laid at least as far as Eagle Plains, 350 km or so in total length.

I spied this grizzly near Engineer Creek, foraging on grass.

She was tough to photo, but these next few were good shots.

Obviously unimpressed with the photographer.

These were late in the day, so the light was long.

Munching again.

The Dempster Highway is always raised 5-15 feet above the tundra, so as not to overheat in the summer and sink into the tundra.

Done for the moment.

Now heading into the Windy Pass hills, very scenic here so I stopped quite often.

I am just north of the pass.

Interesting formation.

Drove in and out of the spruce.

This is Engineer Creek.

Just to the north of the last shot.

Just to the north of the last shot.

Another view of the creek.

Getting closer to the hills.

I usually tent camped here in previous trips.

Looking back north from the creek.

Here is where I set my tent on past trips.

The view from where the creek crosses the road, looking west.

Now entering the Windy Pass hills.

All of these Windy Pass hills shots are progressively moving south.

Nice photograph.

Now clear of the pass, moving into Tombstone Provincial Park.

Camped roadside in this gravel pit.

Another view from the gravel pit.

This car was seen the next morning just south of the gravel pit.

A lone caribou.

Hopping along.

Now in northern B.C. Collected for several hours in the afternoon, then I took a bird bath in Muncho Lake.

Just south, a long stretch along Muncho Lake.

Now in bison territory on the return trip.

Another bunch.

Easy to photograph these, but I stayed close to the truck.

A calf.

Another adult.

Another calf.

One decided to cross the road.

I decided I had enough photos.

Much further south, I saw this moose grazing roadside in the dusk.

This night light warning sign is for moose.

More black bear sightings, now back in Saskatchewan.

A different bear.

I collected many Polygonia and Nymphalids on this two-track near Smoothstone Lake, just off Sask 916.

This is a Polygonia faunus, puddling.

Another Polygonia.

A Polygonia satyrus, basking on the road.

A Polygonia satyrus perching on a leaf.

This is a female Polygonia faunus, puddling early in the morning. I caught this specimen. The common name is Green Comma. The comma refers to the white mark on the hindwing, which resembles the comma punctuation mark.

The next day I made it to Manitoba, just 10 miles south of Thompson. I spent the early afternoon on this ice road, which leads to these two towns in the winter, but only goes about 10 miles in the summer. Thunderstorms ended my collecting day.

Now I am on Man 391, west of Thompson headed toward Lynn Lake and Reindeer Lake. The road alternates between paved and gravel.

Just entering the town of Lynn Lake.

Here is a mural on an old building.

The Fox Mine is south of town. The mine was abandoned years ago, eventually these houses were too. The mine is making a comeback, I was told. Gold, I think.

Another abandoned building.

The town gas station. Features a garbage can resembling R2D2 of Star Wars fame. See my 2014 vacation page for a photo.

Guessing this is not an active business.

Now headed west to Reindeer Lake. Another 75 km and the road (Man 394) ends.

This road is on an esker.

Looking down the esker.

Looking down the road.

Another view down the road.

A road shot.

More road shots.

A caterpillar.

Boloria fritillary, aka the Purplish Fritillary.

Very abundant in Manitoba. Here is a bunch nectaring.

Nice shot.

These photos were taken in the morning, before my favorite butterfly, Polygonia faunus, was flying.

Two more.

Seconds lateer, one flew away.

Heading home, passing the Rat River dam.

This was an awesome moon shot, reflecting off a lake, framed by tress, but light was too low to get a good photo.

Next day, just 10 miles soiuth of Thompson, traffic was stopped for 75 minutes. The ambulance drove away slowly, without lights, a really bad sign for the victim.

Now I am just east of Lake Winnepig, near a small lake named Buffalo Lake. Saw another bear during the day.

Drove a side road off Man 6 that led to Lake Winnepig. A hunting cabin was here.

This was a decent spot for Polygonia faunus and Speyeria atlantis.
